Hearts and Sinew
Avenida Blue, 2021
In 2002 I connected Jim Carroll with the visionary and ambitious Gary Rinkerman, who was making his dreams reality by commissioning work by his favorite performers and artists. His first project was a professional recording of Carroll reading William Blake’s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.
Carroll and Rinkerman quickly became friends and they learned, among many other things, that they shared a love of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes.
Their collaboration continued with another professional recording, this time with Carroll reading two Sherlock Holmes stories, “The Cardboard Box” and “The Final Problem.”
They then expanded into a writing project. Carroll produced two new pieces inspired by the Sherlock Holmes stories. He and Rinkerman had planned for these two pieces to form the cornerstone of a larger collaboration. Sadly, Carroll passed away before the larger vision could be completed.
Hearts and Sinew presents the portion of the collaboration that had been started while Carroll was alive: the two pieces inspired by the Sherlock Holmes stories. Alongside these two pieces are lush illustrations by ____ that Rinkerman commissioned separately. All of this is presented together in a limited-edition, hand-bound, archival quality book.
Rinkerman had planned to produce several different versions of the book with multiple cover colors, multiple type and color of the paper, and so on. It is likely most of these would have a high price point. However, he had also mentioned the possibility of more budget-friendly offerings in addition to the fancier ones.
Unfortunately, I have not seen any physical version of this book, nor do I have any information on how a person might procure a copy of the book. I will update this page when I know more.
